Treasurer

Benjamin Gane

Scout And Guide Graduate Association

For those of you who don’t know me, I’m Ben. You may know me from SUGS as the mascot stealing ninja, the orange Among Us player, or the chair of Rali Cymru (I’m aware of this conflict of interest, see below for more). I’m currently doing my masters year at Swansea and was the treasurer in SUGS for 2 years before spending another 2 as the chair of Rali and so I am well versed in knowing the ins and outs of SSAGO.

What this role means to me:

Fun, Future Proofing, Financing

  • Fun - These past few years have been difficult for everyone, and as the world returns back to normal it’s essential to have members of the SSAGO exec that understand the running of the organisation and bring it back to the enjoyable experience that I know it as from my first couple of years of uni. I’d like to give back to the new SSAGO, what it gave me at the start.
  • Future ProofingOver the pandemic, it has come to mind that parts of SSAGO are at risk of forgetting past hints and tricks for running events and the rest of the organisation. As the exec treasurer, I want to make sure that the documentation for the treasurer role is properly up to date, making the role easier for those coming into the new exec.
  • Financing - I think I would make a good treasurer because apart from loving a good excel spreadsheet, I’d like to make one of the tougher roles in the exec easier to run and be passed onto anyone in SSAGO to handle. On top of that I would like to review how the budget is spent, look into ways to increase funding, and how it can be best utilised for the wider SSAGO groups. Whether that be to help with transport, events or running groups in SSAGO. My main focus is to ensure as many as possible can benefit from it.

What can I bring to the role?

Not only am I very self-disciplined with my time, I am also capable of helping organise others when assistance is needed. This is very useful within the role of the exec as I am adaptable for any situation within a team.

Having experience with the societies funds and budgeting for other camps has also been useful to further understand the sense of budgeting. I am also strict but fair with handling money. I would like to review the SSAGO budget to ensure any spendings are in the interest of SSAGO members and access to funds easier.

Over the pandemic, it has come to mind that parts of SSAGO are at risk of forgetting past hints and tricks for running events and the rest of the organisation. As the exec treasurer, I want to make sure that the documentation for the treasurer role is properly up to date, making the role easier for those coming into the new exec.

A major thing that’s been happening over the past couple of years is the transfer to become a charity. My determination wants to see this finally complete after it being so long since it began.

What about Rali Cymru?

I see this as a great opportunity for the rest of SSAGO. I would obviously have to step down as the Rali Cymru chair, and in doing so would allow someone newer to SSAGO to run our beloved event. As there haven’t been many in person rallies for the past couple of years, it’s essential that the new exec can help guide and assist in running these events to the level they used to be. By allowing a new member in gives those from the younger SSAGO an opportunity to experience running these events whilst having the help from ourselves.

Being close to Rali Cymru will in no way effect the running of other events either. My interests lie in making SSAGO fun, as I have helped do with SUGS, and therefore I want the whole of SSAGO to be run the best it can and make it enjoyable for all!
